The African Prince
Original Artwork by T.W.O.
Royalty is not always something bestowed. Sometimes it is something remembered.
In The African Prince, T.W.O. explores heritage, identity, and the dignity he sees as being carried from one generation to the next.
The inspiration began with an illustration he encountered while reading about the ways hairstyles were used by African ancestors to communicate position and social standing. Rather than simply reproduce what he saw, T.W.O. transformed that idea into a contemporary portrait—a personal homage to ancestral pride and the belief that royalty can live within ordinary people.
In his words:
“I saw an illustration in a book about how hair style was used by our ancestors to indicate royalty and position in society. I was inspired to create this piece as an homage to the royalty that flows within all of our veins.”
Created in oil pastel on multimedia board, the composition centers on a powerful side profile. The figure is built from intense contrasts of fiery orange, red, deep blue, violet, and black, while the sculptural hairstyle becomes one of the work’s strongest visual elements.
