| Creativity doesn’t stop at canvas edges. And it definitely doesn’t stop at prison walls. The designers on Inmate Create are an amazing bunch! If you’ve spent even a few minutes on the Inmate Create Shop page, you already know — the artistic skill inside our community is incredible. But what many people don’t realize is this: For many of our designers, creativity expands far beyond visual art. It shows up in poetry. In storytelling. In music. In raw, honest expression. One example is the Redemption Road design. |
| This design is a collaboration between BoStar who wrote the poem that inspired KJ Marin to draw the art. This is what collaboration looks like inside Inmate Create. One artist writes the story. Another gives it a visual voice. Together, they create something bigger than either could alone. Another example of inspiration beyond the visual spectrum is the band Dragging Chains – “Outlaw Rock from the Inside” This band was formed behind the walls of state prison where they use music to spread a message of hope and redemption to those who have lived lives of crime and addiction. By performing live music for events like Veterans Day, Recovery Celebrations, Volunteer Appreciation, and good ol’ fashioned “rock concerts in the chow hall” (ala Johnny Cash) this group is turning chains into change. And while their music currently lives inside prison walls, their message doesn’t. Through official merch and exclusive Give By Design products benefiting Narcotics Anonymous, their voice is reaching the outside world. |
| Donnie, the founder of Dragging Chains, is deeply involved in the recovery community. He created the Recover Loudly theme to represent bold, visible recovery. As he puts it: He says, “I used to think that drinkin’ and druggin’ was cool. Come to find out, any idiot can get drunk…. it takes a real bad ass to stay sober!” Recover Loudly is all about living ten toes down in the struggle against addiction. Read more about the “Recover Loudly” theme and design in the “What Had Happened Was…” entry below. Creativity has a way of slipping past fences. It refuses to be contained by circumstance. A poem becomes a design. A band turns pain into purpose. A recovery slogan becomes a movement, shouted with conviction. These artists remind us that expression is a human need that thrives even in the hardest places. At Inmate Create, we’re honored to help these voices travel farther than their bodies can. And now we ask you…Where does your creativity break through limits? Where do you create when life tells you not to? How do you express your inner artist?
